Quick: what are your wishes for your children? I asked this question once in another post, and got many thoughtful responses. Of course I want my girls to be healthy and happy (and in fact, that is like a mantra that I tack on to the end of every prayer: "Healthy, happy children. Healthy, happy children.") I want them to grow up and find love, be fulfilled in the way they spend their days, and have a warm home with plenty of food. Doesn't that all sound lovely and blog-worthy?
Yeah, well, those are my selfless hopes, but I happen to have some selfish ones too. For example, I've been a mother for four years, and I already know I want grandchildren. Is that weird? I also secretly hope that my girls won't move too far away. A few hours' drive would be acceptable, but my family (and my husband's) are all so close geographically that we can't even fathom the idea of having to fly to see relatives. I mean, I don't want my daughters to feel stuck in our little rural community, but we're only an hour and a half from the biggest city in Canada...surely they can find work there? Work may not be the problem, though, as many a woman (myself included) has relocated for love. Junior Kindergarten is probably too early to try to set up a local arranged marriage, right?

Do you know that you can use your shower as a water pick? I learned this oh so strange fact from Vanna White of all people. I was watching an interview with her and she said to keep a white smile, she lets the shower water hit her teeth for awhile each time. It acts as a gentle water pick. Weird. But hey, her teeth are very good! So I try it every now and then when I remember.
My kids are too young for showers yet, but I'll share this little trick with them once they are old enough not to want to spit all over the shower hehehe.
We have a sand timer that lets us know how long to brush for. Our timer is 3 min (and apparently 2 min is the actual time you're supposed to brush). I let the kids brush their own teeth for a minute and then I "double brush" for the next 2 minutes.

Every time I put $ into an RESP, I always wonder if it would be better to be buying some plots of land nearby so that my kids never grow up and move far away :)
Tip: We use a kids flouride rinse that lets them see what they left behind after they brushed.
I have given into commercialism and have the Deigo and Lightening McQueen toothbrush as well as the blueberry flavoured Lightening McQueen toothpaste. The boys like to eat the toothpaste more than they actually brush with it though.
To brush my just-turned-two-years-old daughter's teeth, we modified a tip from Today's Parent: we pretend the tootbrush is an airplane and "Captain Rielle" has to find seats for everyone she knows, with the "seats" being her teeth. Ie: here's a seat for Grandma, Grandpa, Mommy, Daddy, and so on. Works like a charm!

We start brushing teeth from newborn on (with a finger silicone brush)...so it's a habit right from the start!

Always have your kid brush their teeth at the same time. Routine becomes habit and makes for healthy teeth!
Have them start young and brush with you until they are big enough to do it on their own. Make it a learning experience.
What a great giveaway! We're just getting started on brushing our little guy's teeth. He doesn't much like it but maybe a new toothbrush would help!

I make up little songs as I brush to help time it out. I also tell them Aaaah or Eeeeee, for open mouth to brush the backs, or closed teeth to brush the front.
I brush twice a day :) But my daughter is a struggle when it comes to her teeth.. an electric toothbrush would probably do the trick!

The character toothpaste seems to keep the kids' attention to their brushing - we never had any of that sort of luxury when we were young.
With two little ones - I have one sing a song to time the other! This keeps them both engaged.

My daughter will brush her teeth only if we are brushing her our teeth at the same time!
We all brush our teeth at the same time. For my 1 year, old I let her hold a second toothbrush, so that she feels like she is brushing her own teeth along with mommy.

My 3 yr old doesn't love having his teeth brushed but sometimes we play "dentist chair" and he lies back and opens his mouth and we pretend he is at the dentist. This makes it fun and much easier to complete the task!!

Whenever teethbrushing starts to seem like a chore we make up a song about everything we are burshing out of their teeth. It always extends the toothbrushing time.

Making it fun to brush the teeth is half the battle. And a good brush will make one realize how badly they needed it!

i hope i win. my son needs braces so bad and they wanted him to have a automatic toothbrush. i had to put it off because they'd have to remove a lot of teeth from his mouth first (it's so crowded) and it's a lot of money to remove that many teeth and THEN put a downpayment on braces. UGH. Anyways... I know that's not what we put to enter. just was thinking... i really am crossing my fingers so his teeth will be a lot better than mine. i only have 21 left. :(
