How To Handle Online Negativity

I have officially made it. I now receive mean tweets.

Now, that's not to say I've never faced any negativity as a blogger before.

On a couple of occasions over the years I have been called to task because I didn't ask tough enough questions of my celebrity interviewees (for example, about political/religious beliefs that don't mesh with mine, or about alleged indiscretions of theirs), but I explained that I keep things light here (the blog is called "This Mom Loves" after all). Most of those commenters at least made their point in a respectful way, they just disagreed with how I handled something, which is their right.

There have also been a few other incidents here and there, but when someone insults you publicly you don't necessarily want to relive it by sharing it with your readers after the fact.

Lately, things seem to have picked up. Just hours after one of my appearances on The Social, someone sent several very critical tweets about the way I spoke...from an anonymous account with an egg for a profile photo, of course. The account had just been set up and those were the only tweets, leading me to believe that someone created an account strictly for the purpose of hurting me. Classy, right?

A couple of promoted Facebook campaigns have also been interesting. When sharing a contest for a drug store, there were several "Scam alert!" comments, as well as a few, "If it's really {pharmacy name} running this contest, why is it on your page and not theirs?" Well, because that's how blog campaigns work. While these sorts of (paranoid) comments are really no big deal, I still don't appreciate my integrity being called into question. (And really, it's a sad commentary on our society that people have to be on such high scam alert.)

I also worked with a razor company and shared a Facebook post for their brand. Do you have any idea how passionate women are about shaving (or not shaving)? I mean, sure, leave a critique of the product if you want. But the fact that I shared shaving safety tips with my daughter led one commenter to launch a full attack on my parenting, my messed up idea of beauty, and the fact that I am raising my daughters to judge others by an unattainable standard. (Several others came to my defense, and the woman later apologized, explaining that she thought it was an ad. Which it was. Marked with #ad. But I'm still a real person.)

The biggest question for me as I navigate all of this is how to respond to the negativity. I turned to my much-more-famous-than-I-am friend Cynthia Loyst, co-host of The Social and creator of FindYourPleasure.com for her philosophy:

"When it comes to negative comments, there have been times I have blocked, times I have ignored and times I have responded and engaged.  But then I came to the realization that I would much rather spend my time and energy focusing on the positive comments, rather than the snarly ones. The people who leave awful words are generally miserable - why should anyone waste their energy on that? As a wise person once said: don't feed the trolls.

Oh and one more thing: sometimes I try to find the humour in it. There is a lot of power in humour so rather than getting upset, when I can see the comments as something ridiculously funny, it immediately takes the sting away. Sometimes it's good to just lighten up. Life is way too short to be bothered by the words of someone you don't know nor care about."

There are some who choose to look on the bright side, like writer Alicia McAuley who recently shared this tweet:

I've seen Cheryl Hickey, host of ET Canada, use the "kill 'em with kindness" approach, replying to mean tweets with things like, "I'm sorry to hear you're having such a bad day," or "I hope your day gets better!", responses which always make me smile. Engaging, yet defusing. Because really, you're never going to make a hater see something your way. (And Cheryl is likely on the right track - someone who is truly happy would not feel a need to bring someone down that way.)

If we want to go really high-profile, we can take a cue from superstar Jennifer Lopez, who told Glamour magazine:

"I always joke about letting the haters motivate you. Everybody has that in their life, people who doubt them or make them feel less than they are. It just takes faith and belief in yourself, and you’ve got to dig deep into that. That has to come from you—nobody’s going to give you that."

As for my own haters, while my instinct in the moment is often to reply to them in my own defense, I have seen much better results by just letting it go (and blocking when necessary).

Even people who aren't officially in the public eye still receive mean responses to what they share on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and beyond. Has this happened to you? What do you think the best philosophy is?

Meanwhile, On Kate's Instagram...

While I still love to delve into topics here on the blog, I also do a lot of "microblogging" on social media. I have the most followers on Twitter, but I'm finding almost zero interaction there lately (is it just me?) so I post a lot to Facebook and Instagram, where my followers seem much more supportive and "like-happy".

I realized, though, that readers who aren't on Instagram are missing out on some of my meaningful moments, so I thought I'd provide some highlights here - just from posts I've shared so far in 2017.

I microblog about...

This Mom's Blogger/Brand Wish List For 2017

Forget a Christmas wish list filled with lots of "stuff"...the sugarplums dancing in my head are actually the great brands that I am dreaming of working with next year.  Maybe St. Nick would be good enough to bring this list to their attention and make some of my Christmas wishes come true in 2017!

Since This Mom Loves launched in 2010, I've worked with dozens of brands - international, national and local - to promote their products and services. Often companies will find me and reach out, though I actually turn down far more offers than I accept, because my time is precious but also because I am very conscious about what is and isn't a fit for my own personal brand. While it's nice to be "found", I also love when I can reach out to companies that I am already familiar with and fond of, because I feel it offers an authentic viewpoint to my readers, and everyone wins in that sort of partnership.

Knowing my audience as well as I do, I'm certain they'd like to read about the following:

Ooma: We recently signed up for this VoIP telephone system, and are very happy customers. Did I mention it's less than 5 bucks a month?

Texture: I have been magazine-obsessed since I learned to read, and for one low price I get unlimited titles right on my iPad. Wouldn't you love to hear more?

Cineplex/SCENE: Regular readers know what I movie buff I am, and I'm constantly at Cineplex with my husband, kids or friends. Plus, my SCENE card helps with concession discounts and free movies.

Kensington Palace: Okay, so this isn't exactly a "brand"...

Let's just say that someone (who is writing this post right now) has a milestone birthday coming up this summer and her BFFs have agreed to travel with her to London, England for a whirlwind tour, which will culminate in a series of blog posts for potential tourists and all Duchess of Cambridge watchers.

I'm hoping the Kensington Palace communications team will keep me up-to-date on Kate's schedule, so I can maximize my chances of being in her vicinity during the trip, when we also plan to follow in the Duchess's footsteps, checking out her current homes (as closely as legally possible) as well as restaurants and shops she's been known to visit.

At the same time, I hope to be able to draw some attention to many of Kate's patronages. As a kindergarten teacher and mom of two young girls, I admire the work she's doing to spread awareness about a range of important topics, including youth and mental health.

In all, this should be a fun series for Kate lovers, especially the Canadian royal fans back home.

PLUS: I'm also planning to work with more of the great fashion, beauty, home and entertainment brands that you know and love in 2017...lots of exciting things to come!

************

If you're a blogger, why don't you take a few minutes right now and make your brand wish list for 2017? Leave a link in the comments so I can check it out (maybe I have some contacts who can help?), and if you tag me on social media I can share as well. I'm using #bloggerbrand2017 as a hashtag...you never know, this could be the beginning of a dream partnership for you!

When Your Mom Is a Blogger {by my 10 year old daughter}

I am Olivia Winn, and my mother created This Mom Loves. I can’t remember a time when she was not a blogger- writing on the weekends, going on trips and taking photos for others to see. And it definitely has pros.

First, free stuff! People send things to mom, or let her go on trips and take us along, so she will write about it. My sister and I love to sort through big boxes, deciding who gets what… though in the end we don’t actually get to keep all of it! (For some reason, mom thinks we already have enough stuff and she likes to donate it or share it at school. Which we actually do understand.) I especially love the Hallmark ‘itty bittys’- I currently have fifteen!

I have also had great experiences with my family because of the blog. For example, last summer we visited the Corus building. I was shown where parts of my favorite TV shows are recorded, I went down a two-floor slide, I stood in front of a plant wall, and I still sleep with the Disney Channel blanket they gave me every night! Over the years we have been to cool places like Santa's Village, Centreville, Casa Loma, Disney on Ice, Sainte-Marie Among the Hurons, a boat cruise, different hotels and movies and way more, all for This Mom Loves.

Mom gets to interview cool people...and when she was talking to Kortney Wilson from Masters of Flip on the phone my sister even got to say hi to her!

My mom always asks us before she shows pictures of us...and sometimes I say no, or that I want her to take a different shot! But it can be fun to be a model too and to show cool new things to the readers...who might get them for their kids!

There aren’t really many cons to having a blogger mother, but I can think of one. After a trip, she needs our opinions. What was our favorite part, what was our least favorite, do you recommend it, and why? Seriously, is she the blogger, or am I? But at least we get to share our point of view!

I am thankful to be a blogger’s daughter, and as I have inherited her love for writing, I think I will be a blogger someday, too.

Blog Bits: How Email Subscriptions Work

Warning: this post is not intended for experienced bloggers with email delivery programs set up and running. I'm actually writing this for the large majority of my readers who are not bloggers, many of whom have asked me questions lately about how it works when you subscribe to a blog through email. Newbie bloggers might take away some helpful info, and of course everyone is welcome to read on!

How it works from the reader's end:

If you love a blog (like This Mom Loves, of course) you can usually find a spot on the homepage directing you to sign up for blog updates through email.

Mine is a little logo that looks like an envelope at the top of my sidebar, and if you click on it, you are directed to a FeedBurner Email Subscription page for This Mom Loves. (I chose to go with FeedBurner, but there are other popular services like MailChimp that you can use to send out your posts for you.)

You enter your email address, type in the captcha that's shown, and click on "Complete Subscription Request". There's still one more important step: you'll receive an email called "FeedBurner Subscription Confirmation" (check your spam if it doesn't arrive right away), and you MUST open that email and click to verify the subscription before you'll start getting updates.

After that, you'll receive any new blog posts from that site in your email daily (though I don't post that often), which some people appreciate so they don't have to keep checking the site regularly for new posts. Most bloggers send links to their new content through social media as well, but if you don't want to have to go looking anywhere, you can get posts delivered right to you, which you can read and/or delete at your leisure.

If you want to head to the blog to read the post, you just click on the title of the email. Sometimes people choose to do this because they want to see what comments have been left (they don't appear in the emails) or because photos or videos can't be seen properly. After I posted the video of my first CHEX Daily appearance a couple of weeks ago, I quickly learned that most people reading my posts in email could not see the video I had embedded in the blog post. From now on, I'll include a link to the clip as well to make it easier to find.

I have my FeedBurner subscriptions programmed to be automatically delivered to readers at 9 a.m. each day (which hopefully reinforces to you that I am not sitting at my desk in my classroom blogging when I should be teaching!)

When the emails land in your inbox, the "from" line reads "This Mom Loves", and the "subject" is the title of that day's blog post.

I made a choice to have the entire posts available in the body of the email, but this is a heavily debated topic in the blogging world. Many bloggers just email the start of the post, with a "click here to read more", directing you to the blog to finish reading the post in its entirety. I find as a blog reader, it bugs me when I have to take that extra step. I sign up to receive blog posts because I WANT to do the reading in my email, and it's an inconvenience (however slight) to click, open a browser, and pick up where I left off.

As a blogger, I understand the theory that your pageviews may very well go down if you make it too easy for people to stay away, (and stats can be very important when it comes to working with brands, plus advertising revenue is often based on how many times your blog is seen online) but I'd rather respect my readers' preferences and keep my content circulating.

It's easy to unsubscribe if a particular blog just isn't doing it for you anymore, or if you decide you'd prefer to read it directly on the web instead of in your email. On that note, I have a confession to make: when I first started using FeedBurner, I checked off the box "Send me an email whenever people unsubscribe". Why on earth did I do that? Those messages, though infrequent, would always bring me down. (Interestingly, there's no option to be notified when someone new signs up!) When putting together this blog post, I made a decision to uncheck that box...and it feels so freeing!

Subscribing through email can be a very convenient way to get new content from your favourite bloggers right in your inbox. Why don't you go ahead and sign up for This Mom Loves right now?

If anyone has questions, I'd be glad to answer them, and comments are welcome as always!

My First Official Photo Shoot: The Big Reveal

Last Sunday I attended a neat little party called "Headshots and Happy Hour".

Hosted by the lovely Alex (@clippo, I Don't Blog), it was an opportunity for a handful of bloggers to get together and have new headshots taken by the very talented Cherie-Lynn Buchanan (@clbuchanan, CL Buchanan Photography).

As each of us waited for our turn in front of the camera, Alex's husband served warm, homemade cinnamon buns and fancy-looking lattes (I'm not a coffee girl, but they sure looked good!) and we had a chance to get to know each other. (I think I'm the only one who hadn't met anyone in the group...so aren't you proud of me for actually agreeing to attend? This is big, people.)

While I wasn't thrilled about having my picture taken, the highlight of my day was finally meeting my best-writer-friend, Sarah (@SarahNewk, Sleeping Is For Losers) for the first time in real life! She has been an amazing professional support as we both navigate the freelance writing/media world, and you wouldn't believe how much you can go through with someone without ever seeing them face-to-face!

Cherie-Lynn had a very warm and complimentary manner - very important when trying to get women to relax and pose for photos - and only needed a few minutes with each of us to get the job done.

Within days she provided us with a very handy online process for checking our proofs and making selections. Our package allows three different poses, in both black and white, and it took me a while (and a few other opinions) to make my selections. I think I have a healthy attitude about my appearance in general, and I don't obsess over how I look in day-to-day candid shots with friends and family, but for some reason I have high expectations for how I will look in official, individual photos like these. I can always find something to critique, but I'm making an effort not to be so hard on myself. (The other ladies' shots were AMAZING, by the way. They're lovely women to start with, but Cherie-Lynn really brings out the best in her subjects.)

You will soon be seeing some or all of these pics popping up on the blog, Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, my front lawn, etc., but here's a sneak peek:

Which one should I start using first? Do you prefer the colour or the black and white? I am well aware that I am the only one who cares about this, but humour me here, would you?

Deep Thoughts on My Blogging Voice

A very lovely and loyal reader e-mailed me earlier this week with some amazing feedback (I do know her in real life, but no, she's not related to me!)

The subject of her e-mail was "Thoughts", which could go in any number of directions, but what was on her mind ended up being very valuable to me.

She complimented me on my recent posts about writing (Adventures in Freelance Writing Volume I and Volume II), saying that they have a different energy than a lot of my other posts: "I just find that you are much more animated and the writing comes to life- your personality shines through," she wrote. "When you write about things that sincerely interest you, it changes your writing style."

This really got me thinking, as I feel that most of the time I do choose topics that interest me - and it's definitely a freedom I appreciate, being able to write what I want when I want, especially when I also have the regular experience of writing to please editors - but there certainly are times that I write posts because I think there's a market for them, and not so much because I feel passionate about the topic myself. Definitely something to keep in mind when planning ahead for This Mom Loves. That's not to say that I need to close the blog off from ideas that are a bit out of my comfort zone, but I need to make sure that I'm letting loose and being myself if I'm going to put something out there.

Thinking about the things that I am passionate about, this friend went on to say: "I'm not suggesting you are square (hee hee)" - her parentheses - "but you are highly organized and efficient in your home life, as well as your career, and this is a talent that I think you should consider focusing on in your blog."

She did suggest that, based on what she knows about me (and what she would love to see as a reader) I should consider more organizational posts, perhaps incorporating questions from readers (she even threw in a few to get me started)! And you know what? I think that's a great idea. I am a very organized person, but in an efficient way, which may not be what some readers are looking for (not all organized people are efficient, which I will explain when I start tackling these questions!)

This was a slow blog week for me, with report card deadlines by day and magazine deadlines by night, so it was a great time for me to step back and absorb this feedback.

Thanks to this friend and reader...and to all of you who support me here at This Mom Loves! Hope you're ready for more organizational and writing posts, information about books and education in general, decorating before and afters (three projects being planned), more celebrity Momterviews and some fun products that my girls and I really like...because that's what's in store around here!

My New Blog Design Revealed! (Merry Early Christmas To Me!)

So...notice something a bit different?

If you're reading this directly on the blog, hopefully you can see that This Mom Loves has an entirely new look!

Thanks to the amazingly talented Kassie from The Cutest Blog on the Block, I've undergone a complete redesign and I absolutely adore it. I also should say thanks to my hubby for the early Christmas gift!

Me: Do you want to give me a blog redesign for Christmas? That way you won't have to shop.

Him: (Do I really need to tell you what his answer was? Though I'm pretty sure there's one more little parcel coming on December 25th.)

So...if you're reading this through email or elsewhere, please humour me and come on over to check out the new look (you can just click on the title of the email, or this link: http://www.thismomloves.blogspot.ca/).

When you check out the new and improved This Mom Loves, you'll see that Kassie has given me a totally fresh look: a header, background, sidebar icons, new fonts, a button and even a cute little favicon that you might be able to see beside the address bar in your browser.

I am so glad that I went with The Cutest Blog On The Block (not a freebie, by the way, I paid in full...or should I say, hubby did!): there was no wait time at all, the process was very straightforward, and Kassie replied to most of my emails within minutes. She made all the tweaks and changes I asked for, and while I don't think I was too difficult to deal with, I was picky about certain things - for example, while lower case letters may be trendy, I couldn't handle having my name and titles not begin with capitals! Maybe it's a teacher thing!

I also deleted some of my old sidebar gadgets for a more streamlined look, so please take a peek there, too. At the top you'll see all of the ways you can connect with me (Twitter, Pinterest, Facebook or through e-mail), followed by a little welcome message, and farther down you can check out the list of all of the celeb Momterviews I've done, my published articles (Today's Parent, Parents Canada, Professionally Speaking, etc.), my blog archive (just in case you're dying to know what I was writing about in, say, June of 2010), and labels, so you can search by subject.

After three and a half years with the old look I figured it was time to freshen things up, and Kassie certainly did that. I am a bit sad to replace the cute little cartoon image of me reading to the girls, but I'll always treasure that picture. I'm actually thinking it might look good framed in my office!

Now you know I want to hear your thoughts (especially positive ones!), so please, leave me a note and let me know what you think!

My 500th Post - $100 Amazon Gift Card Giveaway

{In honour of this special occasion, Grammarly is giving one lucky winner - Canada or US - a $100 Amazon gift card! Read to the end for details!}

Uh, hello, where's the confetti? After three and a half years of blood, sweat and tears (at least two of those literally, I'll keep you guessing which), this is my 500th post here at This Mom Loves!

Despite my occasional phases of being completely overwhelmed (usually at the end of June I want to quit the blog, my freelance writing career, my teaching job, and possibly even run away from my family) once I've had a couple of weeks to decompress, I find my energy and motivation again. (My classroom was set up days ago for September, I've published, written, pitched and been assigned several magazine articles, and I've managed to post here at least a couple of times a week, which is always my goal.)

While this blog really began as an outlet for me, it wouldn't still be going if it weren't for you, whether you've been a regular reader from the start, drop by occasionally, or even if you're a random page view who landed here for some reason from a completely irrelevant web search...since you're still helping me with my stats!

It seems like my loyal readers are a shy bunch, as I get many more emails expressing thoughts/questions about my posts than I do actual comments on the site, and that's fine by me.

Thank you all for keeping me going, and if you feel so moved as to celebrate this milestone in some way, please feel free to follow me by one of the methods below, or just send this link to a friend, family member or coworker who might enjoy This Mom Loves as well!

Click to find me on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, or to subscribe through email (and get every new, complete post sent directly to your inbox. If you do this, keep an eye out for a Feedburner verification email, which you have to click on, and which may go to your spam folder.)

Now it's time to go partay! (Translation: soak in the hot tub with a good magazine, and hit the couch with some chocolate for a PVR'd episode of Big Brother. Should I rename the blog This Wild Mom Loves? No, no, then the search engine traffic would be really disappointed....)

Thanks to Grammarly, (an automated grammar check/online proofreader that finds and explains those pesky grammar, spelling, and punctuation mistakes that are bound to find their way into your first draft), one lucky reader will win a $100 Amazon gift card, and as an early bird bonus, the first five people to comment will win a free 3 month premium Grammarly account!

I'm going old-school with this giveaway and just asking you to leave a comment below letting me know what your favourite topic is to read about on blogs (mine, or any other). Maybe it's decorating, entertainment, recipes (sorry!), fashion, current events, crafts, education...you tell me! Make sure there is enough info in your comment so that I can contact you somehow if and when you are a winner!

This giveaway will run until Monday, September 9th at midnight, after which time a winner will be chosen through random number generation. Good luck!

My Top 10 Momterviews Of All Time

Recently I shared My Top 10 Posts Of All Time...but I didn't include my Momterviews, which are by far the most read posts on my blog.

In case you missed any, here are My Top 10 Momterviews Of All Time, in order of page views (keep in mind that some of the more recent ones haven't had time to rack up the hits...which isn't a reflection on the quality of the woman - or the interview!) Click on the name to see the post, and you can check my blog sidebar for a complete list of Momterviews.

Which one was/is your favourite? What other well-known Canadian moms would you like to see me interview?
